Key Stage 3

The Key Stage 3 curriculum has developed significantly over the last 18 months, incorporating the new national curriculum and the new personal learning and thinking skills.  All work is project based where students have the opportunity to work as individuals or as part of a group.  The projects are all practically based incorporating functional skills.  Where possible ICT at Key Stage 3 work with other departments around the school.

Year 7 Projects Welcome to ICTWelcome to ICT A short introduction to the department; providing students with some of the key skills needed to log on, access work and get going. This unit of work also provides a short introduction to our Virtual Learning Environment. Virtual Tour PresentationVirtual Tour Presentation Students spend time designing and creating a Virtual Tour of the school aimed at year 5 and 6 pupils coming to the school. Students learn how to present information in a logical way and using hyperlinks to navigate around the presentation. ScratchScratch This fun packed topic allows students the opportunity to develop their own programme that controls a character on the computer. It introduces the idea of control and basic programming features. ECO SchoolsECO Schools Eco-school allows students to use the internet to search for meaningful information on a relevant and challenging topic. Students finish by presenting their work in relevant way to a target audience. This topic finishes with an eco-school event in which students present their message alongside that of relevant organisations. Bristol Zoo LeafletBristol Zoo Leaflet Students are challenged with the problem of marketing a particular department at Bristol Zoo. They have do design and present a Leaflet about a particular area aimed at a target audience. Bristol Zoo Data HandlingBristol Zoo Data Handling Students spend a short amount of time designing questionnaires to collect information about why people like or dislike Bristol Zoo. This is then analysed using spreadsheets and database software and the results are then presented in a suitable format. Web DesignWeb Design The internet is one of the most powerful forms of communication we have ever seen. Students spend time developing their own web page linked based on work from a different subject. Previously students have developed their own French or German website.

Year 8 Projects Web Design / AnimationWeb Design / Animation Designing a website can be exiting and interesting students have the option of creating a variety of web parts in this unit of work including flash animation, rollover images and navigation bars. Information SystemsInformation Systems Students imagine they are working for Bristol Airport providing up-to-date information for passengers arriving and departing from the airport. This includes harvesting data from the internet and presenting the information in a variety of ways. Murder MysteryMurder Mystery Students spend time searching through data on a database and finding out who the criminal in different crimes. ScratchScratch Designing and creating a game is a piece of cake, or is it? In this challenging unit of work students spend time looking at what goes into making a game and the complex programming needed to get the game working successfully. SpreadsheetsSpreadsheets Students spend time looking at how spreadsheets are used within organisations to help predict what will happen and model changes to different figures. Bias, Reliability and ValidityBias, Reliability and Validity Students spend time research a key topic and presenting the information in a purposeful way. It is important for students to understand that not all information is real and relevant on the internet. This topic looks at sifting out the irrelevant information and allows students to develop their skills in a topic that interests them.
