As Senior Learning Mentor I oversee young people who have a challenging time in the college. Some of these students, both girls and boys, are given the chance to excel through engaging in the ASDAN CoPE / Boxing Awards Course. That started several months ago. Since then these young people have gained confidence and ability as they train each week. Their work rate has increased as their general fitness has increased and their self-esteem has done likewise.

Staff around the college have commented on how the training has helped these students to chang and are able to engage much more in their lessons as well. Having a mixed gender group also increases the confidence levels as each student wishes to perform well in front of their peers. The work rate of each student on their bag and pad work is very good.

Through the Boxing Awards each student is learning self-discipline and increasingly becoming more able to focus on a task in hand. This skill is now being transferred into other lessons. Those engaged in this Boxing Course are gaining at many levels where they may not have done otherwise. Many have passed their Preliminary and Standard Awards and are now training for their Bronze Award. On top of this they are completing work files for the ASDAN CoPE alongside the sport heading towards their Gold or even Platinum Awards.

Back in September 2011 we have placed Boxing within the Btec PE Department, and we now have a new intake of Year 10 young people, both girls and boys, training for their Preliminary Level Award and are looking forward to inter school sessions later in the year alongside the Year 11 group. We have the privileged position of having a former 2X world champion Kick Boxer, Lloyd Lewis who is also timetabled to team teach with me the new Year 10 group.

Besides all of this Lloyd and I offer public sessions on Wednesday and Friday evenings, and in both we are developing the Boxing Awards to the Young People’s Sessions, the Adult Sessions and the exclusive Ladies Sessions. Also we have the Boxing Gym open every lunchtime for anyone in the college who wishes to ‘give it a go’; exclusively for girls on a Friday. And if this wasn’t enough, I have also been able to take sessions into the Junior Schools of the area as well. Much of the resources for this have been down to the support of Sport England.
